Our Mission

Founded in December 2022, the Student Homes Coalition is a collective of youth activists and higher education advocacy organizations working to address the student housing crisis in California. We believe that every young person should be able to pursue their education without facing homelessness and rent-burden. By advocating for pro-housing policies at all levels of government, we believe that we can restore college affordability and ensure that young people have access affordable, accessible, and abundant housing.

Our Policy Platform

Promote student housing development

The student housing crisis is a result of the lack of supply of units both on and off our campuses. Our policy work centers around making it easier to build housing for young people by up-zoning in high-resourced areas, streamlining project approvals, and reducing cost barriers to development.

Protect young renters

Highly competitive housing markets around campuses leave students with limited rental options, making them more vulnerable to exploitation and discrimination. We advocate for policies that protect students and other young renters, ensuring they have equitable access to safe and affordable housing.

Support students experiencing homelessness

Tens of thousands of students across California experience homelessness every year. As we fight for long-term supply-side solutions to the crisis, we must also support students who are struggling today through basic needs assistance,   homelessness prevention programs, and financial aid.
